Professional Liability Insurance Explained to the Public

Ensuring the protection of the public

Professional liability insurance exists to protect the public from professional negligence (errors or omissions) committed by engineers  in the practice of the profession. For this reason, all members of the OIQ must maintain their professional liability insurance coverage and in addition to fulfilling other related obligations.

Members must, therefore:

  • Subscribe to the basic group professional liability insurance plan. This is to ensure the protection of the public against professional negligence (errors or omissions) committed in the practice of the profession.
  • Subscribe to the group supplementary professional liability insurance plan if they are in private practice, unless they are exempted.

The OIQ ensures that each member maintains professional liability insurance coverage to protect the public.

Identical coverage for all members?

Members are required to carry professional liability insurance in accordance with the Règlement sur l’assurance de la responsabilité professionnelle des ingénieurs.

The amount of coverage depends on the engineer’s type of practice.

  • Basic Plan Group Coverage: The minimum Basic Plan Group coverage is $250,000 per claim, with a maximum of $500,000 per project.
  • Supplementary Plan Group Coverage: The Supplementary Plan Group coverage ranges from $500,000 to $1,000,000 per claim and can cover from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000 for all claims in a year.

Generally, the group insurance plans cover damages incurred due to errors or omissions for 5 years after the engineer ceases to practice or passes away.

What is the benefit to the general public?

Professional liability insurance is one of the measures put in place by the Professional Code and the OIQ to protect you. Before hiring an engineer, consult the directory to confirm that they are a member of the OIQ.
