Professors of engineering

Does your curriculum have all the right ENG.redients?

The judgment, decisions and actions of engineers have a considerable effect on the public, and especially on public health and safety. Professionalism and ethics in engineering are the very foundation of their conduct. But are engineers always aware of that? As a professor, you are able to increase student awareness of professionalism and ethics in engineering. To integrate these principles in your curriculum, the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec invites you to its Professionalism and Ethics in Engineering for Professors workshop.

This workshop, prepared with the assistance of the Comité des doyens en ingénierie du Québec, was designed specially with you in mind, so that you have the right tools to increase student awareness of the professional status of the engineer and the values of the profession with occasional and targeted activities in your curriculum.

Specific objectives

  • Update and strengthen the professional skills of professors of engineering;
  • Update and strengthen the knowledge of ethics of engineering professors;
  • Give professors of engineering the tools to use, build and validate activities that increase awareness of the professional status of engineers and the values of the profession.

Workshop documentation

Three documents will be used for this workshop.

The Participant's Handbook is a preparatory guide that will be sent to you when you register. This document presents information that you must read prior to the workshop so that the instructors can answer your specific questions, as needed. Its objective is to enable you to adequately increase awareness of the professional status of engineers and the values of the profession. It contains the schedule, program, texts to read before the workshop, slides from the presentation and a copy of the Code of Ethics of Engineers.

Handbook I: Methodological Guide suggests ways to introduce these concepts in courses with technical content: how to use and build case studies and tackle other awareness activities with students.

Handbook II: Case Study Collection thoroughly explains the case studies in the various engineering specialties to be used for deliberations or for finding disciplinary errors. In total, 16 cases are discussed, most of which are based on the real experiences of members of the OIQ in recent years.

**Notes: You must print Handbooks I and II, and have them in hand at the time of the workshop.
