Becoming an engineer

Sponsorship
A rewarding activity

Sponsorship is a voluntary activity that contributes eight months of credit to your engineering experience. In other words, sponsorship reduces the 36-month period that is normally required to obtain an engineer's permit. It also offers you much more!

The sponsorship process allows you to discuss with a professional engineer issues pertaining to the profession's fundamental values, the rights and obligations of engineers and the practice of the profession. This is an excellent method of becoming well versed in your future practice!

Such discussions not only pertain to technical issues regarding your work (such as checking calculations and designs), but on the various forms of "know-how" in your profession-an equally essential function!

Sponsorship consists of a set of six meetings of 75 minutes each over a minimum period of 15 months.

Those opting for sponsorship must find a sponsor within a month of commencing their employment. A candidate for sponsorship must then complete the program's registration form in conjunction with his sponsor. If you do not manage to find a sponsor, you can ask the Order to assist you in your efforts.

TIP

Although you must be a junior engineer to enrol in the sponsorship program, there is no reason why you cannot begin looking for your future sponsor in advance. Your sponsor does not necessarily have to work in the same firm as you. He must, however, have been entered on the roll of the Order for at least five years. This criterion allows us to ensure that your sponsor is in possession of adequate professional experience . . . and can give you the proper guidance!
