Becoming an engineer
Being entered on the roll of junior engineers
Once the Order has recognized your degree or equivalent training, you may be entered on its roll and be awarded a junior engineer's permit. But first, you must:
- Submit your application for entry on the roll of the Order.
- Pay registration fees, annual dues and other charges.
- Take out personal professional civil liability insurance where applicable.
Once you have been entered on the roll, you become an official member of the Order. That means you hold the status of a professional, with all attendant privileges and obligations, including:
- The right to vote on the Order's business
- The possibility of holding an elected administrative post within the Order
- The right to member services
- The obligation to comply with the laws and regulations governing the profession
Junior engineers may engage in activities that are reserved by law for engineers, under the immediate direction and supervision of an engineer.
Once you have been entered on the roll, you should pursue your efforts to obtain an engineer's permit. This may take from 12 to 36 months, depending on the experience credits you are awarded.
