The professional inspection process
General supervision of the practice
The OIQ seeks to preserve the well-earned trust of the public toward its members and toward the engineering profession. The Professional Inspection Committee is responsible for supervising the practice of the engineering profession.
Inspections are conducted throughout the year. The professional inspection process seeks first and foremost to assist an engineer in making any required improvements to his professional practice. During their visits, inspectors check the quality of this practice in the workplace, as well as the general manner in which an engineer's files, books and records are kept.
An inspector may also help the engineer in a number of other ways:
- He makes the engineer aware of his duties and obligations toward his clients, the public and the profession.
- He explains the importance to the engineer of applying the profession's four fundamental values: competence, ethics, responsibility and social commitment.
- He encourages the engineer to acquire a personal plan for maintaining and for developing his skills.
- He encourages the engineer to verify his practice and reviews the engineer's files in the strictest confidence.
- He provides the engineer with information on the various forms of unlawful practice of the profession.
In response to an inspection report or to a complaint, the Professional Inspection Committee also carries out special investigations. If the situation so warrants, the committee may recommend that the Board of Directors restrict the right of a member to engage in professional activities and require the member to successfully complete a refresher training course or program.
