All members who perform engineering services must cover their professional liability, which means that they must take out professional liability insurance. The Regulation respecting professional liability insurance for members of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, which has been in effect since April 1, 2013, is intended to provide all members, whether they work in general or private practice, with full coverage that meets all the requirements of the Professional Code.
Members who work in general practice are covered by the basic group professional liability insurance plan for OIQ members.
The Regulation provides for a mandatory group supplementary insurance plan for all members in private practice in addition to the basic group plan to which members already belong. The group supplementary insurance plan is offered through the OIQ's broker.
It should be mentioned that junior engineers who work in private practice are also subject to this requirement.
